KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Geologist Prof. Dr. Felix Tongkul confirmed that the mud volcano eruption in the Tabin Lahad Datu Wildlife Park yesterday had nothing to do with the strong earthquake that shook Taiwan yesterday evening.
Sabah's are located far from Taiwan which did not allow the strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan at 2.44pm yesterday to affect the mud volcano in Sabah.
The video of the phenomenon, which lasts about 10 seconds, shows a large eruption that spews out a large amount of black mud and bubbling as a result of gas or steam released from the earth.
Prof Dr Felix , however, said the phenomenon of mud volcano eruptions is a normal thing that happens when the mud pressure in the earth increases and needs to be released and can be a repeating incident.
